BNP Paribas Open C. Wozniacki vs M. Sharapova Semi-Finals

Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US OpenImage via WikipediaWorld No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki move up one spot to the BNP Paribas Open semifinals when her friend eighth-seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka retired with a injury to the left side of her hip, while trailing 3-0 in the first set Thursday.


Wozniacki will play three-time major champ Maria Sharapova, who prevailed against Peng Shuai 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to reach her first semifinal of the year.


By reaching the semi finals Wozniacki assures her numner one position in  the WTA rankings through the upcoming Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.


Former top-10 and currently  25th-seeded Tommy Robredo withdrew before his quarter-final match against,ne of the hottest players in the ATP , Juan Martin del Potro because of a strained left abductor injury sustained during Wednesday’s conquest of 21st seeded American Sam Querrey.


Top-ranked Spaniard Rafael Nadal won against  Ivo Karlovic in a night match, Rafael Nada will be  facing Del Potro in the semifinals.


MIAMI / Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams has retired from next week's Sony Ericsson Open in Miami suffering from an  abdominal injury, tournament organizers said Thursday.


Williams aquired the injury last January's Australian Open, where she stop playing  in the third round, and is currently receiving rehabilitation at home.
