India vs Sri Langka Cricket World Cup Finals 2011

Sachin Tendulkar got to a fifty off 67 balls, India v Pakistan, 2nd semi-final, World Cup 2011, Mohali, March 30, 2011

India's dream of a World Cup triumph at home is one step closer after their bowlers suffocated Pakistan's batsmen to set up a 29-run victory in the semi-final in Mohali. Saturday's decider will now be a battle of the hosts, and while Sri Lanka might have been surprised by the strength of India's bowling effort, they would also have taken note of a slightly lacklustre batting performance.

In the end, India's 260 for 9 was enough as their bowlers did a fine job, but had Pakistan helped themselves, the target could have been so much more gettable. Sachin Tendulkar was dropped four times in his 85, MS Dhoni was put down once and while Wahab Riaz was extremely impressive in collecting five wickets, Umar Gul had one of his most forgettable days, wilting under the pressure of a World Cup semi-final.

By contrast, India's display in the field was much more professional, and that was the difference in a match that lived up to the extreme pre-match hype. The decision to leave R Ashwin out to make room for Ashish Nehra was an odd choice on a pitch offering plenty of spin, but Nehra and his bowling colleagues built the pressure and gave Pakistan's batsmen little to attack after they made a promising start and reached 70 for 1.

The Indians didn't give away an extra until the 37th over of the innings, and the way they put together strings of dot balls and tight overs was key to their success. Munaf Patel picked up two victims and Yuvraj Singh made up for his golden duck with a pair of wickets, but the most important breakthrough came when Harbhajan Singh bowled Umar Akmal for 29.

Akmal had struck a pair of sixes off Yuvraj, driving him over the sight screen and pulling him over midwicket, and anything was possible while he was at the crease. But Dhoni called on Harbhajan to replace Yuvraj, and with the first ball of his spell he came around the wicket and pushed one across Akmal, taking the off stump when the batsman played for the spin.

Shahid Afridi also fell to Harbhajan when he skied a catch off a full toss, and the obdurate Misbah-ul-Haq was left to steer the chase. He found it difficult to lift his tempo and was the last man out, caught on the boundary for 56 in the final over, but he ate up 76 deliveries and had he shown some more intent earlier, Pakistan might have had a chance.

It was a disappointing end for Pakistan after their top order gave them hope. Mohammad Hafeez made an encouraging 43 before a string of eight dot balls from Munaf brought a brain-fade as Hafeez tried a premeditated paddle sweep from outside off stump and edged behind to Dhoni.

Soon after, the loss of Asad Shafiq brought the Mohali crowd to life, when he tried to cut a Yuvraj delivery that was much too full and straight, and the middle stump was knocked back. Shafiq had made 30 and had displayed a cool temperament until that point, but the required run-rate started to balloon, and Pakistan never recovered.

But while India have booked a place in the final, they must hope they haven't used all their good fortune too soon. Tendulkar might be the finest batsman of his generation, but today he was the luckiest, dropped on 27, 45, 70 and 81. It seemed as though he was going to bring up his 100th international century with one of his least convincing innings.

Misbah at midwicket was the first to put him down, before Younis Khan spilled a regulation chance at cover, both off the bowling of Afridi. The third opportunity came when Kamran Akmal didn't move his hands quickly enough to a thick edge, again off Afridi, and while that was a tough opportunity, a pull to Umar at mid-on from the offspin of Hafeez should have been taken.

Before he had any of those lives, Tendulkar had survived two very tight calls on 23: an lbw decision that was given out by Ian Gould but on review proved to be spinning down leg, and a near-stumping the next delivery when he just got his back foot down in time after losing his balance reaching outside off. When Tendulkar was finally taken at cover by Afridi off the bowling of Ajmal, Pakistan's relief was evident.

Soon after, a scratchy Dhoni, who was also dropped by Kamran, made the mistake of challenging Simon Taufel on an lbw decision. Dhoni had 25 when he missed a Riaz delivery that pitched just in line and was hitting the stumps. It was the second outstanding call by Taufel, who had given Virender Sehwag lbw in a similar fashion earlier, even though the left-armer's angle meant pitching outside leg was a possibility.

Riaz was the man who Afridi had to thank for keeping Pakistan in the contest after India made a strong start and reached 114 for 1 off their first 18 overs. After Gautam Gambhir was stumped wandering down the pitch against Hafeez, Riaz grabbed two wickets in two balls - Virat Kohli caught at backward point and Yuvraj bowled by a low full toss for a golden duck.

Nobody looked as fluent as the crease as Sehwag, who took 21 off Gul (0 for 69) from the third over of the innings. What looked like a 300-plus total in those early overs became 260 when Suresh Raina helped them recover from their middle-order failures.

It was enough, but India's batsmen will need to improve if they want to lift the trophy on Saturday. For now, they can dream of their first World Cup in 28 years.

Jackie Chan is not Dead

RUMOURS of Jackie Chan's death have set the Twitterverse into overdrive, but according to his Facebook page the action star is alive and kicking.

The bogus news took hold after it was tweeted that the action star had suffered a heart attack.

'RIP Jackie Chan' topped Twitter's trending topics, sparking confusion and leading to a post on Chan's Facebook page debunking the story.

"Jackie is alive and well. He did not suffer a heart attack and die, as was reported on many social networking sites and in online news reports.

"Jackie is fine and is busy preparing for the filming of his next movie."

The prank originated on a fake website made to look like the Australian news website Yahoo!7News.

Chan is not the first celebrity to be prematurely killed off on the internet.

Jurassic Park star Jeff Goldblum was the victim of a similiar bogus story that he had died in a ski accident in New Zealand, sparking a spate of copycat celebrity death hoaxes.

Well, Francesca Schiavone has played two games so far here at Miami and have to mentioned that in both of her games she didn't looked too well. Francesca Schiavone has played with a quite increased number of errors in her games against Kerber and Dominguez-Lino and I think that she could have some serious problems against a player from another level, against Agnieszka Radwanska who did looked much better in her games from Miami than the italian player.

Agnieszka Radwanska is a great defender and playing against her it is always so tough as you have to be at your best 100% if you want to get something from the game. From the class point of view there is no serious difference between these two players but certain now I will say that Agnieszka Radwanska should have an advantage in form. Radwanska never managed to win against Schiavone, but these are just stats as all the games between these two players have been really tough ones.

Javier Hernandez did not fail Mexico in giving Coach  de la Torre's debut match against Paraguay.

The Manchester United 22-year-old striker scored his first goal on a diving header off a pass from Pablo Barrera. Hernandez raced past a defender and knocked the ball into the left corner of the net, catching Paraguay keeper Justo Villar leaning the other way.

Andres Guardado goal made it 2-0 in the 29th minute for Mexico, Hernandez added his second goal five minutes later on another shot from in front of the net. Hernandez later received a standing ovation from the pro-Mexico crowd when he checked out in the 65th minute.

Goal Keeper Talavera, one of three keepers de la Torre is considering for the starter's spot, nearly had a shutout before Riveros scored in the 87th minute on a quick deflection from just in front of the goal.

Spain were trailing to a 29th-minute wondergoal from Jaroslav Plasil but Villa fired home from the edge of the area in the 69th minute, moving clear of Raul's record of 44 goals and relieving the tension in Granada.

Less than five minutes later, he added the second from the penalty spot after Jan Rezek fouled Andres Iniesta in the area.

Danica Patrick Bang Bus Nascar 2011 Bristol Motor Speedway Results

Danica Patrick at the 2007 Red Dress Collectio...Image via WikipediaDanica Patrick’s spring session in NASCAR ended with a bang. A big one. And she wasn’t happy about it.

With 53 laps to go in Saturday’s Nationwide race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Patrick made contact with Ryan Truex. Patrick’s car spun hard into the wall – first the nose, then the rear, leaving her with a destroyed race car.
Danica Patrick closed out the spring session with a crash at Bristol Motor Speedway.

After getting out of her car, Patrick waited for the cars to come back around. When they did, Patrick walked onto the track, located Truex and spread her arms apart as if to say, “What gives?”

“It felt like to me – I came out of the corner I was just running down the straight and it felt like he came off the wall,” said Patrick, who was running 17th at the time, two laps down. “I don’t I know if he had a tank-slap off the wall, like he was pushing up and then it snapped on him and he came off. I don’t know. I don’t know if I may be giving him the benefit of the doubt right there.”

Upon first look it didn’t appear as though Truex did anything wrong. It looked liked Patrick got loose, slipped up the track and into Truex’s rear bumper. But the head-on replay does show Truex turning slightly into Patrick’s lane.

“It was my fault. I guess that’s just racing at Bristol,” Truex said. “We were racing there and I just came off the corner, got loose, and as I was saving it just came down the hill and got into her. My fault. I mean, I’m sorry. I didn’t want for that to happen. I don’t know if she thinks I did it on purpose. I guess she’s just mad because she was running good. It was an accident. I apologize.”

Regardless of fault, it was a tough way for Patrick to end this portion of her Nationwide schedule. She’d finished in the top 20 in her first three races, including a career-best fourth-place run two weeks ago at Las Vegas.

She ended up 33rd at Bristol.

Now, she heads back to her day job in IndyCar. Patrick’s next Nationwide race is June 4 at Chicagoland Speedway.

“I’m just disappointed,” she said. “I felt like this was a pretty decent run at Bristol for the first time. … It’s disappointing to leave for a couple of months with this kind of a thing.”

Kyle Busch won the race, his fourth straight win at Bristol across both the Nationwide and Cup series.

Chelsea FC vs Manchester City Highlights Replay

The instant Ramires kicked the ball and it went into the back of the net, making Chelsea's 2-0 triumph over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge Stadium, the English Premier League overall standings has changed to a dramatic shift. The Blues(Chelsea) weren't just solidifying their spot in the Champions League for next season with a top 4 finish, they were also sending a message to Arsenal and Manchester United that the league title isn't over and they can still win it. With their victory, Chelsea moved closer just four points of second-place Arsenal and nine of Manchester United Wayne Rooney. Chelsea will face Manchester United and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford on May 7 with a game in hand over the league leader. It's still too far out to catch Manchester United with Rooney ,Hernandez and Berbatov, but in an exciting season like this, where the only sure thing is to lose , we can never really know who will win the English Premier league.

Skipper Lee Cattermole (back), defender Nedum Onuoha and midfielder Bolo Zenden (both calf), will all be included after resuming full training, while Danny Welbeck could be handed a first start after his return from a knee injury at Arsenal a fortnight ago.

The game could come just too soon for striker Fraizer Campbell after his seven-month lay-off with a knee injury, while Michael Turner (also knee) is expected to return to training next week.

Craig Gordon is likely to be named among the substitutes as he continues on an exercise programme to address tendinitis in his knee, while David Meyler (also knee) is closing in on full fitness.

Welbeck is determined to make up for lost time as he plots a return to the Sunderland starting line-up.

Mauricio Shogun Rua vs. Jon Bones Jones

Ben Bieker

Shogun at 100 percent wins this fight, but I don’t believe he is. The ring rust alone can change the tide of this fight. Look for Jon to take the title from him with a third round TKO, but these two will meet again once Shogun gets his fighting legs back.
Kevin Nelson

Jones and Rua are similar in that they were both hyped cant miss prospects. Jones is coming off a win over Bader in which he stuffed many of his takedowns. Rua has not fought in a year after having his 3rd knee surgery in as many years. I see Rua winning however due to his experience and Jones inexperience. Although there are no glaring weaknesses in Jones game I do think that Rua is just too well rounded and fans have not seen Rua at his very best yet and having the extra motivation of being the underdog in this fight will give Rua all the ammunition he needs in providing a KO stoppage of Jones.

Sean Farrell

I have Jones winning this fight by TKO or submission within the first 3 rounds. Rua has been on the shelf far too long and the rust will be apparent especially coming off of his 3rd knee surgery of his career. Jones will be able to utilize his agility and unorthodox striking to take advantage of the rusted Rua and earn a stoppage. Is Rua 100% out of this fight? Not by a long shot, but all the advantages are leaning towards the white hot Jones in this one.

Mirko Cro-Cop vs. Brendan Schaub

Ben Bieker

9 times out of 10 if Brendan trades with Mirko he goes to sleep. He was overconfident in his hands in the Roy Nelson fight and look where that got him. He also does not have the best power in the world either not being able to finish Gabriel Gonzaga. SO, I’ll take Mirko by second round TKO.

Kevin Nelson

I think Roy Nelson exposed Schaub in repeatedly landing the right hand on him in their fight. The Chris Tuchsherer fight did not impress me and I think his win over Gonzaga was over a shot former contender. Cro-Cop is past his prime but still possesses a good ground game I see Crocop stopping Schaub in this bout.

Sean Farrell

Mirko Cro-Cop is a seasoned striker. Thats all you can say about Cro-Cop, Schaub needs to realize that even though he attempted to trade with Nelson it wasn’t very bright and trading with Cro-Cop would be just as foolish. Cro-Cop in my opinion still has the power to end the fight with one trademark head kick and if Schaub is weary of this and no longer respects Cro-Cop’s ability he may fall victim to the long list of highlight KOs Mirko and his left leg are known for dishing out. I am going with Cro-Cop by KO

Urijah Faber vs Eddie Wineland

Ben Bieker

Urijah is finally at a weight class that suits his body. If you don’t want to take his last fight as proof then he will define it here with another first round submission.

Kevin Nelson

Faber is one of the best lighter weight fighters and although I give Wineland the standup advantage I see Faber winning a closer than expected decision win over Wineland.

Sean Farrell

Urijah Faber making his UFC debut against anyone is a big deal, Faber is the premiere fighter of the lower weights with the exception of Cruz and Aldo. Faber has all the skills necessary to get Wineland down and submit him at any point during the fight. On the feet however, Wineland can trade with the best of them and Faber may want this fight on the ground early and often. Faber should test the stand up early then shoot from there and work from the ground. Faber should win by submission.

Ferguson Banned For Five Matches

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been suspended for five matches and handed a £30,000 fine following comments he made about referee Martin Atkinson earlier this month.

The FA sanctions will commence on March 22, meaning Ferguson will be confined to the stands for the FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City at Wembley as well as Premier League clashes with West Ham, Fulham, Everton and, most crucially, away at Arsenal.

Premier League leaders United are just three points ahead of the Gunners, who have a game in hand.
Alex Ferguson - Scottish football manager and ...Image via Wikipedia
The FA was unhappy with comments Ferguson made following a controversial 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, when the United boss said he had "feared the worst" when Atkinson was appointed match official for the Premier League clash on March 1, adding: "You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway - and we didn't get that."

An FA statement read: "At an independent regulatory commission today (Wednesday) Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a touchline suspension for three matches and fined a total of £30,000.

"The commission found the charge of improper conduct relating to media comments proven, following remarks made in relation to match official Martin Atkinson in post-match interviews after Manchester United's fixture with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 1 March 2011.

"Furthermore the commission invoked a two-match suspended touchline ban, relating to a previous charge of improper conduct in relation to media comments made in October 2009. Therefore Sir Alex Ferguson was ordered to a serve a five-match touchline ban commencing on Tuesday 22 March 2011."

The United boss was angry over Atkinson's failure to dismiss Chelsea defender David Luiz for fouls on Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney at Stamford Bridge after he had already been booked.

He was further upset when Chelsea were awarded what he considered a "soft" winning penalty when Yuri Zhirkov took a tumble under a challenge from United centre-back Chris Smalling.

ESPNsoccernet can reveal that the Ferguson's legal team have been promised full written reasons for the decision, which they will study before deciding on an appeal.

"I am sure Sir Alex feels that there is an FA agenda against him," a source said. "When you look at what Harry Redknapp said about collusion between the linesman and the ref, and Martinez about bias, but they 'do' Sir Alex over the word fair.

"The FA have said there can only be one interpretation over his use of the word fair, but this is a draconian penalty and you can imagine Sir Alex is not exactly swinging from the chandeliers about it.

"He might appeal, but he might just accept it and get on with it, but he's not happy about it and it has left a bitter taste."

This is the fifth time in five years that Ferguson has been charged because of comments either to or about a referee.

Bayern Munich 2-3 Inter Milan (3-3 Agg.) Highlights

Arjen Robben and Wesley SneijderImage via WikipediaBy Clark Whitney

After going against the ropes in the first half, Inter overturned their first leg loss to earn a sensational 3-2 win against Bayern in Munich.

Inter overturned their first-leg loss at San Siro and a 3-1 aggregate deficit on the night as they earned a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich and booked their spot in the Champions League quarterfinals on away goals after the tie ended 3-3 overall.

It took less than four minutes for the Nerazzurri to get their away goal, a typical poacher's finish by Samuel Eto'o after the Cameroonian was played in by Goran Pandev.

In the 21st minute, Bayern drew levelled with a little help from Julio Cesar, who spilled Arjen Robben's long-ranged blast before Mario Gomez netted from a clever overhead kick. Ten minutes later, Dejan Stankovic deflected Robben's through ball into the path of Thomas Mueller, who flicked the ball over the on-rushing Cesar with the outside of his right foot to make it 2-1, and handed Bayern what looked like a comprehensive 3-1 aggregate advantage.

The match changed considerably in the second half, however, as Inter grew in confidence. Wesley Sneijder fired in a gorgeous daisycutter on 63 minutes to restore parity on the night, and the Nerazzurri looked the more dangerous side from then on. Goran Pandev settled the tie on 88 minutes with a brilliant finish into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

After struggling in the opening minutes, the hosts drew great confidence from Gomez's goal, and created more than enough clear chances to score a third goal. Franck Ribery skipped past Andrea Ranocchia on 35 minutes but Cesar atoned for his earlier mistake with a tremendous save. Shortly thereafter, Gomez had his effort roll across the goal line before Ranocchia's clearance deflected off the post. Robben was through on goal two minutes before the break, but only managed to hit the side netting.

For their part, Inter had enough opportunities to reclaim the lead, but Stankovic missed wide from the centre of the penalty box. Sneijder also came close from a free kick, but his dipping effort was over the bar.

In the second half, the hosts were comparatively flat in attack, and Gomez's saved volley on 62 minutes was their only real chance on goal to make it 3-2. Sneijder's strike, coupled with Robben's substitution on 68 minutes, marked the teams' role reversal. On 67 minutes, Pandev fired over the bar, but the Macedonian made no mistake with his brilliantly struck winner.

The result sees Inter through to the quarter-finals again as Serie A's flagship team. Bayern failed to avenge last season's final defeat as they crash to Inter for the second consecutive year, and will be without silverware in 2011.

Manchester United 2-1 Marseille

Champions League

19:45 GMT, March 15, 2011

Old Trafford, England

Referee: Carlos Velasco Carballo

Corner for United now after Giggs wins it. He will take it too, though the referee is having a word with Chicharito.

Mandanda comes out and claims it, good hands by the Marseille goalkeeper.

GOAL Hernandez

United 1-0 Marseille. Giggs and Rooney combine well on the left and the latter flashes the ball across the six-yard box for Chicharito to tap it in.

Remy finally with an accurate delivery and Cheyrou swings his right foot at the ball from the penalty spot. Smart save from Van der Sar down low.

GOAL Hernandez

Valencia threads it through to Giggs on the right of the area and he crosses it in to Hernandez, who sweeps the ball in from close range once more.

Remy again finds himself in space and he's won Marseille yet another corner.

GOAL Wes Brown own goal.

United 2-1 Marseille. Scholes tries to clear his team-mate's header off the line, but it's already crossed and Marseille are back in it.

It's an 11th Champions League quarter-final for United, though they made it hard work for themselves. A poacher's brace from Chicharito sends them into the last eight. Wes Brown's own goal made the last ten minutes very interesting, but United held on and eagerly await the draw on Friday now.

Azkals battles cold Mongolia

Source: Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Azkals will be wrapped in thermal underwear, use gloves and wear long sleeves and hope these will be enough to give them the warmth to survive the freezing temperature of Ulan Bator and also the Mongolian football team in their AFC Challenge Cup rematch Tuesday.

Game time is 1 p.m., which organizers say is the warmest part of the day and warm to them is about minus 15 degrees Celsius which will be the prevailing condition when the two teams clash at Mongolia’s National Stadium.

Mongolia has the advantage as far as dealing with the weather is concerned, but the Azkals hope to carry them through by their skill and sheer fighting spirit against what surely will be a long, freezing day.

“More than the Mongolians, we’re more concerned of the cold condition,” Azkals team manager Dan Palami said. “This is just another adversity we need to overcome. But I know the boys will give their all to win despite the cold condition.”

The match will be aired live by Studio 23 starting at 12 noon.

Mongolia will need to beat the Philippines by three goals to thwart the advance of the Filipinos in the group stage of the Asian Challenge Cup which will be held March 20-31 in Myanmar.

The only minor concern for the Azkals will be the absence of Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong who opted out of the team at the last minute, according to Philippine Football Federation president Mariano ‘Nonong’ Araneta.

De Jong, 20, had a game with his Indonesian club team Persiba Balikpananin the Indonesan Super League on Sunday and was expected to play in Ulan Bator Tuesday. But Araneta said, “He did not confirm or asked for a ticket for Ulan Bator, so we’re not expecting him to join the team.”

The extremely cold condition is expected to affect the home grown Azkals and even their Filipino-foreign teammates many of whom live in Europe.

“Took a walk outside and checked out the game pitch. Almost turned into ice,” team captain Aly Borromeo said on his Twitter account before the team held their final practice yesterday in the hopes of protecting their 2-nil advantage it earned in Bacolod City.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss is confident the team will survive the cold challenge.

“Only the game tomorrow (Tuesday) will tell us how ready the boys are... But the boys have a good character and the preparations are good,” Weiss said.

A glitch in airport documents nearly prevented another Azkal to join the team in Ulan Bator.

Filipino-Icelandic Rey Jonnson, who came from England, was held by airport officials in Beijing because he didn’t carry his visa, which was already with the team in Ulan Bator. The Mongolian Football Federation provided the Beijing officials a guarantee letter but it was not enough to convince them.

So Jonsson flew to Ulan Bator Monday via Incheon, South Korea after being stuck in Beijing for nearly 40 hours.

Phil Younghusband and Chieffy Caligdong, the two players who scored the goals in the team’s 2-0 win last Feb. 9, are expected to lead the team’s attack along with striker Ian Araneta.

The Azkals will also rely on Borromeo, James Younghusband, Anton del Rosario, Roel Gener, and goalkeeper Edward Sacapaño, who will fill the void left by Neil Etheridge.

Azkals now in Mongolia, tired but in high spirits

By MIAKKA J. LIM

After shuffling through different modes of transportation in Japan Saturday, the Azkals have finally settled in Ulan Bator Sunday morning, two days before the big match against Mongolia's Blue Wolves for the second leg of the their 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualifying round.

The Azkals' trip to Mongolia from Japan took longer than expected after the massive 8.9 earthquake that struck Japan Friday afternoon closed down airports and disrupted other major transport services.

The national team went to Japan to conduct their high-altitude training in Gotemba City (with an elevation of 1,500 feet), on the eastern foot of Mount Fuji, south of Tokyo. This was part of their preparation to acclimatize themselves with the playing conditions in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

The Azkals who flew in from Japan via Beijing landed at 3am Sunday while Simon Greatwich, who took a flight from Incheon City, South Korea after his flight to Tokyo was diverted to Osaka, landed a little earlier at 2:45am. Welcoming them in Mongolia was a reported -20°C weather. But team officials have confirmed that the weather is now -16 degrees Celsius, still a lot colder than expected.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President Nonong Araneta spoke with GMA News Online Sunday morning and said that despite the recent catastrophe that struck the northern part of the country, they are still blessed to have had a fruitful training in Japan and was able to get to Ulan Bator safely.

He also gave praises and gratitude to the Japan Football Federation for giving them all the necessary help they needed.

Araneta also stressed that overall they had a good trip in Japan because it gave the Azkals much needed acclimatization and that they were able to play in an artificial turf just like the one that will be used during the match in Mongolia.

After all the traveling that they've done in the last 48 hours, Araneta said "there's no denying the guys are tired but still in high spirits." He added that the Azkals are "more focused to win the match."

For the rest of Sunday, Araneta added that the Azkals will probably limber and relax to make sure their mind and body are well rested for Tuesday’s big match.

On Monday, they will visit the National Sports Stadium in Ulan Bator and start training. He said the weather forecast for Tuesday included a high of -3°C and hopefully would stay that way until game time at 1pm. --

Forward Wayne Rooney Leaving Manchester United?

Rooney playing for EnglandImage via Wikipedia
Non Manchester United Fans will have to wait until after June 2015 because Manchester United  forward Wayne Rooney has signed the contract to extend for five years.

After thorough negotiations between the Club and the player’s representatives, ultimately, the contract was signed.  By the end of his contract, Wayne Rooney  will be a Manchester United player  for 11 years.

Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said, “It’s been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United.  I said to the boy that the door is always open and I’m delighted Wayne has agreed to stay.  Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand.  I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is."

“I’m pleased that he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United’s great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.  I’m sure everyone involved with the Club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of.”

Manchester United Forward Wayne Rooney said, “I’m delighted to sign another deal at United.  In the last couple of days, I’ve talked to the Manager and the owners and they’ve convinced me this is where I belong.  I said on Wednesday the Manager’s a genius and it’s his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.

“I’m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history – which is the reason I joined the Club in the first place."

“I’m sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they’ve read and seen.  But my position was from concern over the future.  The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it’s up to me through my performances to win them over again.”

Manchester United Defeated Arsenal 2-0 in FA Cup

Last Saturday evening at the Old Trafford Stadium , Manchester United FC won over  Arsenal FC 2-0 in a FA Cup quarter-final tie to be included in the teams to play at  Wembley for the 27th FA Cup semi-final game.
Wayne Rooney and Mikael Silvestre compete for ...Image via Wikipedia

On the 28th minute, Manchester's forward, Fabio, scored a sliding cross from a looseball by Arsenal Goalie Manuel Almunia that came from a strong shot given by Manchester United forward Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez on the left side of the pitch. Manchester United Wayne Rooney Hat trick gave the 2nd goal for United.

Rafael shot the ball but was deflected by Arsenal defender Johan Djourou that bounced to the awaiting Wayne Rooney. It was great that Wayne Rooney was at the exact place to hammer the ball with his head.

This is Arsenal's third competition that they failed to qualify in the span of less than two weeks. Their remaining  tournament will be at the Barclay Premier League which they hoped to emerge victorious after a six year draught.

Manchester United Wayne Rooney was in his best form for  this game.  He was playing with such gusto and with  brilliance play-making that the fans are waiting to see all season, but was absent.

Manchester's Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio were full of excitement to be able play side by side. Fabio's goal, his second goal from Manchester, was created by passing to Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

One of the most memorable performance and highlight of the game was that of Manchester United goalie Edwin van der Sar.  The 41 year old was consistent and provided several important saves that he became the valuable player for Manchester. Van der Sar will surely fill a big gap to Manchester United defense next season.

Manchester will be playing in the Champions league's last 16 against Marseille with confidence. Antonio Valecia will also give additional fire power for Manchester United.  He played for 45 minutes for the first time as a substitute, after a broken ankle sidelined him since September.
